If the Lahore airport immigration hall is full and your driver is already outside, send one short message before you join the queue: your name, your flight, that you have landed, and that you are now waiting for passport control. Then send a second message when you reach the baggage belt. Those two updates tell the person outside the one thing they cannot see for themselves, which is where you are between the aircraft door and the arrivals exit. Nobody can promise how long immigration will take, and there is no official live wait time to quote, so do not guess a number. Say what stage you are at instead. Do not plan around e-gates either: as of September 2026 they are still described as a plan or a pilot, not a service you can count on at Lahore.
Why the Lahore airport immigration queue grows so quickly
Allama Iqbal International Airport is heavily tied to the Gulf. Figures on the airport's Wikipedia entry put Jeddah at about 50 weekly flights, Dubai at 42 and Riyadh at 19, with Emirates, flydubai, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Saudia, flynas, flyadeal and SalamAir all listed as serving the city. The same page records just over six million passengers for July 2024 to June 2025.
What that means in the hall is simple. When two or three Gulf arrivals land within the same hour, most passengers reach passport control at roughly the same time, and many of them are Pakistani workers, families and pilgrims coming home. The counters do not care which flight you were on. You join the back of whatever has built up.
Three other things add minutes:
- Clearance is still largely manual. The Federal Investigation Agency, which runs immigration at Pakistan's international airports, lists "manual immigration clearance of passengers instead of bio metrics processing / e-gates" among its own issues on its immigration wing page.
- Counter capacity has been changing. In August 2026 the Interior Minister reviewed an expanded immigration area at Lahore, where the FIA had raised the number of lines from seven to 20 using temporary counters while permanent ones are prepared, according to ProPakistani. The report does not say whether that covers arrivals, departures or both, so treat it as helpful context rather than a guarantee of a short wait.
- Questions take time. The Pakistan Airports Authority's Lahore arrival procedure says officers "will verify your Photo ID and may ask some questions". A family of five with mixed passports takes longer at the desk than a single business traveller.
A realistic way to think about the wait
Because no authority publishes live queue times for Lahore, any figure you read online is somebody's experience, not a standard. A more useful approach is to plan in stages. Here is an example, not a measurement:

The point is that "late" is not one thing. A driver who hears "through immigration, waiting for bags" knows you are close. A driver who hears nothing for an hour may reasonably wonder whether you missed the flight.
E-gates at Lahore airport: can you use them yet?
People search for "e gates Lahore airport" because they have used automated gates in Dubai, Doha or at UK airports and hope for the same on arrival. Here is where things stand.
- In December 2025, ProPakistani reported that the FIA, the Pakistan Airports Authority and NADRA were working together to install e-gates at Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, with no completion date given.
- In April 2026, a Pakistan Today report on a planned one-window clearance system said Islamabad was the likely first airport in a phased rollout.
- In September 2026, Geo News reported that the FIA was planning an e-gate pilot for eligible passengers, such as work-permit holders and others whose credentials can be checked digitally.
A headline is not the same as a working gate. Until the FIA or the airport announces that a Lahore airport e gate is open to arriving passengers, and says who qualifies, assume you will see a staffed counter. If gates are running on the day you land, follow the signs and staff directions. Either way, do not tell your driver you will be "quick" because of e-gates.
Which counter to join: NICOP, dual nationals and foreign passports
The Lahore arrival procedure published by the Pakistan Airports Authority says the immigration counters are divided into categories:
- All passports
- Overseas Pakistani passengers and card holders
- Foreigners and taxpayers
- Older citizens and people with special needs
- Women travelling alone and women with children
- Diplomats, foreigners and taxpayers
Signage and staffing on the day decide which lines are open, so read the boards and ask a staff member if in doubt. Joining the wrong line and being sent back to the end of another one is an easy way to lose time you did not need to lose.

For British travellers, the FCDO's Pakistan entry requirements say you need a visa before you travel, applied for through NADRA's online system, unless you hold a NICOP or Smart NICOP. The same page warns that leaving Pakistan will be difficult if your passport is not stamped on entry, so check the stamp before you walk away from the desk. It also notes that a single parent, or an adult who is not the parent, travelling with a child may be asked for evidence of parental responsibility before leaving Pakistan. Pack it now rather than hunting for it later.
NADRA's Pakistan Online Visa System lists visa-on-arrival options for some nationalities under tourist and business categories, but it is explicit that applicants should plan travel only on receipt of a valid visa. If your approval arrived as an email, have it saved offline and printed.
One more document that catches long-stay visitors: the Lahore arrival page says travellers staying in Pakistan for more than four weeks need a polio vaccination certificate, which is checked when you leave. It does not slow your arrival, but it is easier to arrange early in your stay than on the last day.
The one-line update that keeps your pickup on hold
Drivers and the people coordinating them are not worried about a slow queue. They are worried about silence. A passenger who has not been heard from since the flight left Dubai could be stuck at passport control, could have missed the flight, or could already be walking out of a different exit. A short, factual message removes that doubt.
Send it at the right moment
- As the aircraft reaches the stand. Turn your phone on, check you have signal or roaming, and send your first update before you stand up. Once you are shuffling down the aisle with a child and a cabin bag, it rarely happens.
- When you see the size of the queue. This is the message that matters. Keep it to one line.
- When you reach the baggage belt. You are now through the part nobody can predict.
- As you leave customs. Say what you are wearing and how many people and bags are with you.
What the message should say
Copy this pattern and fill in your own details:
Salaam, this is Ayesha Khan for the pickup on the Dubai flight, EK [flight number]. Landed at Lahore, now in the immigration queue. It looks long. I will message again at the baggage belt.
That example uses a made-up name and a placeholder flight. The structure is what matters: who you are, which pickup, where you are now, and when the next update will come. It gives no guessed time, which is deliberate. If you say "20 minutes" and it becomes 50, the second message sounds like an excuse. If you say "I will update at the belt", you have made a promise you can keep.
For a family arrival, add the headcount and anything that changes the car: "Four adults, two children, six large suitcases, one wheelchair." If the person who booked the car is a relative abroad, copy them in, or ask them to relay it. If your phone will not connect
Some passengers land with roaming switched off or a local SIM they have not bought yet, and the FCDO notes that protests in Pakistan can bring temporary disruption to mobile and internet services. Plan for that before departure:
- Save the driver's or coordinator's number in two places, including on paper.
- Agree in advance that if nothing is heard within a set period after landing, a named family member will call the coordinator on your behalf.
- Ask a relative at home to watch the airline's own flight status page, so they can at least confirm that the aircraft has arrived.
Free waiting and extra waiting: settle it before you fly
"Will the driver wait?" is the wrong question. The right ones are: how much waiting is included, when does that allowance start, and what happens after it runs out?
An allowance counted from the scheduled arrival time behaves very differently from one counted from the actual landing time or from an agreed meeting time. On a day when the flight lands early and immigration is slow, those can be an hour apart. Ask which one applies to your booking, and ask for the answer in writing.
Then ask about extra waiting:
- Is it charged by the hour or in blocks?
- Does someone need to approve it, and who? You, the booker abroad, or either?
- Who pays for parking while the driver waits?
That last point has a real cost at Lahore. The Pakistan Airports Authority's parking information lists a car park for meeters and greeters, with a published car rate of Rs. 100 for the first three hours and Rs. 30 for each additional hour. Airport charges change, so check the current rate, but it is worth knowing whether parking sits inside your quote or on top of it.

If you are held for secondary checks
Most delays at passport control are just volume. Occasionally an officer will ask a passenger to wait to one side while a document is checked or a supervisor is called. The FIA's role, as its own site describes it, is to examine the travel documents of arriving and departing passengers, and that sometimes takes longer than a stamp.
Stay calm, answer questions plainly, and keep your documents together. Then deal with the pickup:
- Send one clear message. Something like: "Still at immigration, asked to wait for a document check. Not a flight problem. Will update as soon as I am through." You do not need to explain more than that.
- Hand over coordination. If you expect to be without your phone for a while, ask a family member to take over communication with the coordinator. Make sure that person knows whether they may approve extra waiting or a later pickup.
- Ask for help in the right place. The FIA says it runs One Window Facilitation Desks at Lahore and four other major airports, staffed around the clock to resolve immigration issues for international passengers. The Lahore arrival page also mentions a special desk for overseas Pakistani passengers, available 24 hours a day.
Lahore airport immigration contact number
Travellers often look for a direct immigration office Lahore airport number to ring from the queue. The FIA does not publish a separate Lahore desk line on its immigration page. What it does publish is a national helpline, 051-111-345-786 and 1991, an email address at complaints@fia.gov.pk and an online portal at complaint.fia.gov.pk, all listed on the FIA website. If you are inside the hall, the facilitation desk is quicker than a phone call. If you have a complaint after the event, the portal gives you a written record.
After passport control: belt, customs and the walk out
Once you are through immigration, the Lahore arrival sequence set out by the Pakistan Airports Authority runs like this:
- Trolleys. Baggage trolleys are free and collected from marked assembly areas in the arrival lounge.
- Porters. Porter service is available for a charge. You get a porter slip from the Passenger Facilitation Services counter first.
- Baggage belt. Check the flight information screens for your belt number. Show your bag tag to the airline if asked. Report lost or damaged baggage to the airline before you leave the hall.
- Customs. Use the green channel if you have nothing to declare and the red channel if you are carrying goods above the allowance or anything restricted. Bags may be X-rayed. The airport's passenger guidance also notes that importing liquor is banned and it will be confiscated in the arrival lounge.
- Exit. You come out into the arrivals concourse, then either walk to the car park, use the cab services or leave by the pedestrian exit gate.
The last point matters for your driver. "I'm out" means different things depending on which way you turn. Agree the meeting point before you land, and send one final message with a landmark rather than simply "outside". Arriving from Jeddah after Umrah
Jeddah is the busiest single route out of Lahore on the Wikipedia count. If you are coming home from Umrah on one of those flights, you are likely to be in a hall full of other returning families, and a group with several passports and extra bags moves more slowly through both the desk and the belt. Build that into your plan and your message.

A word on travel advice
The FCDO's Pakistan travel advice does not place Lahore in an area it advises against travelling to. It does advise against all but essential travel to Dera Ghazi Khan in Punjab, and it warns more broadly that protests can lead to road closures and transport disruption in Pakistani cities. On a day with road closures, the drive from the airport can take longer than the immigration queue did, so keep sending short updates after you are in the car as well.
Your pre-flight checklist for a Lahore arrival
Run through this the evening before you fly:
- [ ] Driver or coordinator number saved on your phone and written down
- [ ] Booking reference, passenger name and final flight number in one note
- [ ] Waiting allowance confirmed, including when it starts and how extra time is approved
- [ ] Parking responsibility clear
- [ ] Meeting point agreed, with a landmark
- [ ] Every traveller's passport, NICOP and visa approval in one wallet
- [ ] Roaming switched on, or a plan for who calls if you cannot
- [ ] A relative at home who knows your flight and the coordinator's number
