Your airline has pulled your flight home forward by a day or two, and the hire car outside your family's house is booked until the old date. Returning a rental car early is normally manageable, but three things decide how smoothly it goes: telling the supplier in writing the moment the flight changes, finding out whether unused days come back as a refund, a credit or nothing at all, and planning the handover so it doesn't eat into the four hours Islamabad International Airport asks international passengers to allow before departure. Get those three right and the rest is fuel, a quick clean and a receipt you keep in your inbox.

This guide walks through that sequence in the order you will actually face it, starting with the message you send today and ending with the ride to the terminal once the keys are gone.

First hour after the airline change: what to do

When a rebooking email lands, the temptation is to ring the rental supplier straight away. Spend ten minutes getting your evidence straight first.

  1. Screenshot the airline notice. Keep the email or app message that shows the original and new departure. If a supplier later asks why you shortened the hire, this is your evidence that the change was not a whim.
  2. Confirm the new flight on the airline's own page. Airports publish live boards too; Islamabad's official site has a departures schedule. Check the date, not just the time. A departure at 02:00 or 03:00 means your last full day with the car is the day before, which moves the whole plan back.
  3. Message the rental supplier in writing. Use whatever channel your booking confirmation names: email, WhatsApp or the booking platform's message thread. A phone call is fine for speed, but follow it with a written note.
  4. Ask for a written reply. You want the supplier to confirm the new return date, time and place, and to state what happens to the unused days.

What to put in the message

Keep it short and factual so nothing gets lost when it is forwarded to a depot or a driver.

  • Booking reference and the name on the booking
  • Vehicle and registration number
  • Original return date, time and location
  • The new flight number, date and departure time
  • Your proposed return date, time and place
  • A direct question: "Will the unused days be refunded, credited or charged in full?"
  • A second question: "Is there any fee for returning the car early?"

Example message (illustrative only): "Booking PT-0000, white saloon, registration ABC-123. My airline has moved my flight to Tuesday 03:10 from Islamabad. I would like to return the car on Monday at 16:00 instead of Thursday at 10:00. Please confirm the new return point and tell me in writing how the three unused days are treated and whether any early return fee applies."

That last line is the one that matters. A verbal "no problem, sir" at the counter is pleasant, but it will not help you if the final invoice says something different.

Returning a rental car early: refund, credit or nothing for unused days

There is no single rule for an early return rental car refund in Pakistan. It depends on the terms you accepted when you booked, and those vary by supplier and by how you paid. In practice you will meet one of three outcomes.

OutcomeWhat it usually looks likeWhat to ask for
Refund of unused daysDaily rate for the days not used is returned, sometimes minus a chargeThe amount, the method (card, bank transfer, cash) and the expected timing
Credit or voucherValue held for a future hire with the same supplierExpiry date, whether it transfers to a relative, and the exact value in writing
No refundThe booking was prepaid on a non-refundable basis, or a minimum hire period appliesWhether any part of the deposit or extras (child seat, extra driver) can be released

A few things push the answer one way or the other.

Rate type and payment method

A prepaid discounted rate is often the least flexible. A rate paid at pickup, or a hire priced day by day, is more likely to be adjusted. If you booked through a platform rather than directly, the platform's own policy may sit on top of the supplier's.

Weekly and monthly pricing

Long hires are sometimes priced as a package. Cutting a two-week hire to nine days can mean the supplier recalculates at the higher daily rate for nine days rather than refunding five days at the package rate. Ask them to show the calculation before you accept it.

The car rental early return fee

Some suppliers charge a fixed administration fee for changing a booking, or keep a portion of the unused value. That is a legitimate commercial term if it was in the agreement you signed. What you want is clarity: the fee amount, where it appears in the terms, and whether it is deducted from a refund or from your deposit.

If your hire came through iDrive, our sister platform and the network behind Pakistan Taxi, it explains how changes and cancellations are handled in its published cancellation policy. Your own booking confirmation and supplier terms still govern the specific hire, so read those alongside it.

Drop off the rental car at the airport before your flight, or hand it back at home?

Once the supplier agrees a new date, the next decision is where the car goes back. Both options work; they suit different families and different flight times.

If you choose the airport

Airport drop-off sounds efficient: drive in, hand over, walk to departures. In Pakistan there are extra layers that people forget.

  • Entry checks. At Islamabad, the Airport Security Force runs body and under-vehicle searches at every entry point. Expect a queue at busy times.
  • Reporting time. Islamabad's departure guidance asks international passengers to report four hours before departure and domestic passengers 1.5 to 2 hours before. Your handover needs to finish before that window starts, not inside it.
  • Where the handover happens. Agree the exact spot in writing: a named car park, a particular gate, or a pickup bay. "Meet at the airport" is not a location. Islamabad's general car park holds around 2,200 vehicles according to the airport's parking page, which is a big space to find one person in at 2am.
  • Parking charges. If the supplier's staff are late and the car sits in the car park, someone pays the tariff. Islamabad lists its charges on the parking page and changes them from time to time (the page shows rates effective 1 July 2026), so check the current figure rather than relying on memory. Agree in advance who pays if the handover runs over.
  • No-parking areas. The same page lists a Rs 1,000 fine for vehicles lifted from no-parking areas, on top of the hassle of finding where the car went. Leaving a hire car at the kerb "just for five minutes" while you find the supplier is a poor gamble.

Lahore's Allama Iqbal International Airport sits roughly 15 kilometres from the city centre, according to its Wikipedia entry, and Karachi's Jinnah International is reached via Shahrah-e-Faisal. Neither is far in distance, but city traffic at the wrong hour can turn a short drive into a long one, so build the handover around your departure time rather than the map.

If you choose collection at home

Home collection takes the handover out of the airport completely. It suits early-morning flights, households with elderly relatives, and anyone travelling with more suitcases than a saloon boot can take.

  • Ask whether the supplier offers collection and whether it costs extra.
  • Book the handover for daylight on the day before, if the flight is overnight. Damage checks are easier to agree when both of you can see the bodywork clearly.
  • Make sure someone at the house knows the plan in case you are out when staff arrive.
  • Arrange the ride to the terminal separately and confirm it before the car goes (more on this below).

Fuel and cleaning before an early return

Fuel and cleaning charges are small, but they are an easy way for a deposit to come back lighter than expected. Returning early does not change the rules in your agreement; it just gives you less time to meet them.

Fuel

Check your agreement for the fuel policy. The usual arrangement is to return the car at the same level you received it. If you picked it up full and return it with a quarter tank, the supplier may charge for the difference plus a refuelling fee.

  • Look at your pickup photos or the handover sheet for the starting fuel level.
  • Fill up at a station close to the handover point, not at the other end of the city.
  • Keep the fuel receipt. It carries a time stamp and location, which helps if the gauge reading is questioned.
  • On the drive to Islamabad International from Rawalpindi or the city, the airport sits about 25 kilometres south-west, per its Wikipedia article. Allow for that last stretch when you judge how much to put in.

Cleaning

Most agreements accept normal use: some dust, a few footprints. What tends to attract a charge is sand throughout the cabin after a trip north, food spills, pet hair, or smoke smell.

  • Clear every door pocket, the glovebox and the boot. Chargers, sunglasses and children's toys are the usual casualties.
  • Shake out floor mats and do a quick vacuum if the car has done a family trip.
  • If the car needs a proper wash after dusty roads, ask whether the supplier would rather do it and charge a stated amount. That is sometimes cheaper than a rushed wash on your last evening.

The handover itself: ten minutes that protect your deposit

However early you return the car, the handover is where the money is settled. Treat it like the pickup in reverse.

  1. Walk round the car with the supplier's representative. Point out any marks from the pickup sheet so they are recognised as existing damage.
  2. Photograph everything. All four sides, each wheel, the windscreen, the interior, the dashboard with mileage and fuel gauge visible. Photos on your phone carry a time and date.
  3. Hand back every item. Keys, spare key if you were given one, registration papers kept in the car, child seats, any tag or card that came with the vehicle.
  4. Ask for the return document. A signed return sheet, an email, or a message in the booking thread confirming date, time, mileage, fuel level and "no new damage" (or listing any damage agreed).
  5. Confirm the deposit timeline. Ask when the deposit hold will be released or refunded and by what method.

Don't let the handover become a quick key toss in a car park because you are late for check-in. That is exactly why the timing section above suggests finishing well before your airport window.

Getting to the terminal after handing back the car

This is the part that gets forgotten. The car was your transport; once it is gone, you need another way to the airport, and your luggage has not got any lighter.

If you returned the car at home

You will need a ride from the house to departures. Plan it at the same time you arrange the car return, not on the night.

  • Count passengers and suitcases honestly. A family of five with large cases usually needs more than a standard saloon.
  • Set the pickup time by working back from the airline's reporting time plus the drive plus a margin for entry checks.
  • Share a named contact number with whoever is driving you, and keep a second family number as backup.

Our guide to planning the return airport journey before your last day covers the timing arithmetic in more detail, and the Islamabad airport journey guide (planned link) sets out what to expect on the approach and at departures.

If you returned the car at the airport

You are already there, but only if the handover finished outside the terminal building you need. At a large site, the car park, the handover point and departures can be a fair walk apart with trolleys. Ask the supplier where exactly their staff will meet you, and whether it is the departures side.

If the plan falls apart

Flights move again. Handover staff run late. A relative's car breaks down. Have a fallback written down before the day:

  • The supplier's emergency number and the name of the person who confirmed your return
  • A second way to the airport that you can request at short notice
  • The airline's rebooking contact in case you do miss the flight

If you want someone to plan the house-to-airport leg for you, you can send your journey details through the Pakistan Taxi planning page (planned link). We treat it as an enquiry: the team checks what is possible for your time and luggage and comes back to you, rather than promising a vehicle up front. The page on what to check with the transfer operator when your flight changes is useful if the new flight time moves again after you have arranged the ride.

Keeping the return receipt for disputes

Deposit and damage disputes can surface after you have left the country, when an email arrives saying a scratch was found or a cleaning fee applied. By then you are in Birmingham or Dubai and the car is back on the road. Your records are the only thing that settles it.

What to keep

  • The airline's schedule-change notice
  • Your written early-return request and the supplier's written reply
  • The original booking confirmation and rental agreement
  • Pickup photos and return photos, with their original time stamps
  • Fuel receipt from the final fill
  • The signed return sheet or confirmation message
  • Any card or bank statement lines for the hire, deposit and refunds

Store them in one folder, and keep them until the deposit is fully released and any refund you were promised has arrived. A few extra weeks costs nothing.

If the refund or deposit does not arrive

  1. Write to the supplier with the booking reference, return date and a copy of the return confirmation.
  2. Refer to the specific line in the terms or the written reply that promised the refund or credit.
  3. Give a clear date for a response.
  4. If you paid by card, your card issuer may have a dispute process. Check its time limits early rather than after months of waiting.

Keep every exchange in writing. A calm, dated paper trail is far more persuasive than a long phone call.

A working timeline to return the rental car before your departure flight

Every trip is different, but the order of jobs barely changes. Here is a sequence you can adapt, counting back from the new departure time.

WhenJob
As soon as the flight changesScreenshot the airline notice; message the supplier in writing; ask about unused days and fees
Within a dayGet the supplier's written confirmation of new return date, place and refund treatment
Two days beforeBook your ride to the terminal if the car is being collected from home
Day before (or morning of a daytime flight)Refuel near the handover point; clear and tidy the car; photograph it
HandoverWalk round, photograph, return keys and papers, get the return document
Leave for the airportAllow for the drive, entry checks and the airline's reporting time
After you land homeFile all records; watch for the deposit release and any refund

The table is a planning aid, not a promise of how long any step will take. Traffic, supplier availability and airport queues vary, so leave more margin than feels necessary on an overnight departure.

A reminder for the next time you hire

An early return is much easier when the booking was set up with changes in mind. Before your next self-drive hire, it helps to:

  • Read the change, cancellation and early-return terms before you pay, not after.
  • Pay a little more for a flexible rate if there is any real chance your return date will move.
  • Carry the right documents. The UK government's Pakistan safety and security advice says UK visitors need the 1968 international driving permit as well as their UK licence, and warns that the wrong documents could lead to detention and a police report.
  • Check the same FCDO advice for the places you plan to drive. It advises against all or all but essential travel to several areas, including Balochistan and much of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and describes road quality outside the main motorways as variable.

If you are still weighing up whether to drive yourself at all, our self-drive hire page explains what to ask about eligibility, deposits and handover, so the next early return is a message and a handover rather than a scramble.
