Picnic spots near Islamabad for families, and getting everyone home

The easiest picnic spots near Islamabad for a mixed family group are Lake View Park on the edge of Rawal Lake, the Shakarparian hills beside Zero Point, and Daman-e-Koh on the Pir Sohawa Road above the city. Of the three, Lake View Park Islamabad is the one that suits small children and grandparents best: lakeside lawns, a play area and plenty to do within a short walk. Shakarparian is closest to the centre and pairs well with the Pakistan Monument or Lok Virsa. Daman-e-Koh has the view, but it's a hill road with monkeys and a car park that fills fast. If your group includes keen walkers, add a Margalla Hills trail in the morning and keep it short.

The picnic spot is only half the plan, though. What actually goes wrong on family days out is the journey: a car park that's full at 4pm, a cousin who wandered off to the swings, a grandmother who can't walk back up a slope, and a drive home that runs into the evening rush and a thunderstorm. This guide pairs each place with how you get a vehicle close, how far people will walk, and a simple headcount routine so the same number of people who arrived go home.

Picnic spots near Islamabad: which suits your group

Before choosing, count three things: how many adults can walk comfortably for 15 to 20 minutes, how many children are under five, and whether anyone needs a toilet within easy reach. Those answers decide the place more than the view does.

None of these needs a long drive from most Islamabad sectors, which is the point: a picnic near the city should leave energy for the return, not use it all on the road.

Lake View Park: the busy, child-friendly option

Lake View Park sits near Malpur village on the edge of Rawal Lake, and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) runs it. For a family, its strength is choice. Wikipedia's Lake View Park entry lists a large walk-in bird aviary, a picnic point, a children's play area, a carousel, horse riding, a road train, a swimming pool, fishing and boating, among other attractions. That listing notes boating on Saturdays only, so treat any activity schedule as something to confirm on the day rather than promise to the children in the car.

Getting in shouldn't cost much. In February 2023 the CDA board abolished entry fees at Islamabad's public parks, including Lake View Park and Japanese Park, Dawn reported. Individual rides and attractions inside can still carry their own charges, and fee policies can change, so carry some cash.

Access and parking

Lake View Park has several attractions spread along the lakeside, and families tend to pick one end and stay there. When you plan the drop-off, choose the gate nearest the part you want (aviary, play area or picnic lawns) and tell your driver that name, not just "Lake View Park". On busy afternoons the car parks near the main attractions fill first; a driver who drops you at the gate and then parks further away is often faster than circling together.

Food, shade and toilets

Stalls and snack points appear around the busier sections, but on a full family day you'll want your own water, fruit and something simple for children who refuse stall food. Look for a spot under trees early; by mid-afternoon the shaded lawns near the play areas are the first to go. Locate the nearest toilet block as soon as you settle and walk the route once with the elders so nobody has to search for it later.

A Shakarparian picnic: close to the centre, easy to combine

Shakarparian is the wooded hill area near the Zero Point Interchange, so for most of Islamabad and much of Rawalpindi it's the shortest drive of the lot. The Pakistan Monument stands on the western side of the Shakarparian hills, with its museum beside it, and the Lok Virsa museum of folk heritage is in the same area according to the Islamabad article on Wikipedia. That makes a Shakarparian picnic a good choice when you have overseas guests who want one landmark and one relaxed meal rather than a whole day outdoors.

Access and parking

Because Shakarparian has several separate attractions, the drop-off point matters. Decide in advance whether you want the monument, the museum or the gardens and slopes for your picnic, and give the driver that one landmark. Walking between them with a picnic basket and a pushchair is more effort than it looks on a map.

Parade days and national events

Shakarparian includes the parade ground that hosts the Pakistan Day Parade every 23 March. Around that date, and around other national events, expect road closures and restricted access near Zero Point and the parade area. If your picnic falls in that week, pick Lake View Park instead or check local traffic updates before you set off.

Daman-e-Koh picnic: the view, the road and the monkeys

A Daman-e-Koh picnic is what most visitors picture when they think of Islamabad: the city laid out below the Margalla Hills. The viewpoint sits on the Pir Sohawa Road at about 2,400 feet (730 m), roughly 500 feet above the city, and on a clear day you can pick out the Faisal Mosque, Seventh Avenue and Rawal Lake, according to Wikipedia's Daman-e-Koh entry. The CDA has expanded the car park there, and the viewpoint has telescopes and a large map of the city.

The road up

Daman-e-Koh is on the way to Pir Sohawa, and that road is narrow and winding, with congestion a known problem. On weekend afternoons and holidays the queue to get up can take longer than the drive from your house. Two practical rules:

1. Go up in the morning or early afternoon, not at 5pm with everyone else heading for the sunset.
2. If someone in the group gets car-sick, seat them in the front and ask the driver to take the bends gently. A family vehicle with good ventilation beats a small hatchback packed with six people.

Monkeys and wildlife

Monkeys (rhesus macaques) are a regular part of the Daman-e-Koh experience, and Wikipedia notes that tourist treats are a big attraction for them. Keep food inside bags and bags zipped. Don't let children hand-feed them, and don't eat while walking around the viewpoint; sit down to eat in a place where you can see around you. The wider Margalla Hills National Park is home to leopards too, and leopards have been reported coming down in winter, which is one more reason to leave before dark.

Food and shade

What's open for food around Daman-e-Koh changes from year to year. The well-known Monal restaurant in the national park was demolished in 2024 on the order of the Supreme Court, so older guides that tell you to eat there are out of date. Bring your own water and snacks as a baseline.

Margalla Hills trails before the picnic, not after

The Margalla Hills National Park has seven numbered trails, and Trail 3 and Trail 5 are the most popular. Trail 3 starts from Margalla Road in sector F-6/3; Wikipedia's Islamabad article puts the climb at roughly 30 to 50 minutes to the viewpoint and about an hour and a half in all to Pir Sohawa, one way. For a family, the viewpoint and back is the sensible target. The park is managed by the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board.

Closing times and rules

We don't print fixed trail closing times here. They're set by the park authorities, they have changed over the years, and they may differ by season or after incidents such as fires or bad weather. Check the notices at the trailhead before you set off. The safe planning rule is simpler anyway: be off the trail well before sunset, with time to spare for the slowest walker.

How to fit a trail into a family day

• Walk first, eat second. Start the trail in the morning, then drive to Lake View Park or Shakarparian for the picnic. Tired legs sit happily on a picnic blanket; they don't enjoy a steep descent after a heavy lunch.
• Split the group. Hikers go up; elders and small children wait at the picnic spot. Agree one meeting time and one landmark before the hikers leave.
• Plan two pickups if needed. Trailhead drop-off in the morning and a separate collection from the picnic spot works well with a driver on a day booking rather than a single ride.
• Carry more water than you think. Islamabad's June highs routinely go above 38 °C, and there is little to buy on the trail itself.

Weekend and holiday crowds

Expect every place in this guide to be at its busiest on weekends and public holidays, and above all during the Eid holidays. Crowds change three things for a family: parking, toilet queues and the chance of losing a child.

What helps:

1. Arrive early. A group that's on the grass by late morning gets shade, parking near the gate and an easy start home.
2. Choose a spot you can describe. "Near the aviary entrance" or "under the big trees beside the play area" is something a lost ten-year-old can tell a guard.
3. Dress the children in something bright, and take a photo of each child on arrival so you have today's clothes on your phone if you need to show someone.
4. Write a phone number on the inside of a small child's wrist or on a card in their pocket.

Weather matters too. July and August are the monsoon months, with heavy rain and evening thunderstorms. On a monsoon picnic, plan to be packed up by mid-afternoon; the late-day storms are exactly when the drive home is slowest.

Food, shade and toilets for elders and children

A family picnic lives or dies on these three.

Food

Pack a simple core (water, fruit, sandwiches or parathas wrapped in foil, something sweet) and treat stall food as a bonus. In busy places, stalls can run out or close earlier than you expect, and a hungry toddler at 3pm isn't a problem you want to solve by queuing.

Shade and seating

Take a proper mat or a couple of folding chairs for elders. Low picnic blankets are hard for someone with bad knees to get down to and up from. Face the sitting area away from the sun's afternoon path, and pick your spot within a short, level walk of the vehicle drop-off if you have a wheelchair user or someone on a walking stick.

Toilets

Find the toilets first, then choose your spot. Walk elders there once so they know the route. For small children, carry wipes, a change of clothes and a spare bag for anything wet; for elders, keep any regular medicines in the day bag, not the car boot.

The headcount routine that gets everyone home

This is the part most picnic plans skip, and it takes two minutes. Use it at every stop: arriving, before a second location, and before the drive home.

Before you leave the house

1. Write the list. Every name, grouped by vehicle. "Car 1: Nani, Ammi, Sara, Ali, Zain. Van: everyone else."
2. Name a counter for each vehicle. One adult per vehicle is responsible for that list. Not "everyone keeps an eye out" — one named person.
3. Share the number. Put a message in the family group: "We are 14 people in two vehicles." A number is harder to get wrong than a list of names.

On arrival

1. The counter counts people out of the vehicle before anyone drifts off.
2. Agree the meeting point (a gate, a sign, a big tree) and the leaving time out loud, and make the children repeat it.
3. Take the photo of each child's clothes.

Before leaving each spot

1. Ten-minute warning. Announce it, then collect children from rides and play areas first; they take longest.
2. Count at the meeting point, not at the car. People get separated in car parks, not on the lawn.
3. Count again inside the vehicle. Doors shut, seat belts on, counter says the number out loud, and the driver waits for it.
4. Message the group. "Car 1: 5 of 5. Leaving." If the numbers don't add up, nobody moves until they do.

If someone is missing

Stay put with most of the group at the meeting point so the missing person comes back to a familiar place. Send two adults to check the last known location, the toilets and the nearest play area. Phone them first; call park staff or security quickly if a child is missing. Don't let a second person go off alone to search.

Evening return timing

A picnic day usually ends in one of two ways: gently at 5pm, or messily at 7pm in the dark with tired children. Plan for the first.

• Leave before sunset. At Daman-e-Koh this is especially important: the hill road is slow, the viewpoint draws its biggest crowds at sunset, and this is leopard country in winter.
• Allow for the city traffic. Islamabad's evening traffic and the roads back towards Rawalpindi slow down as people head home, and on weekends everyone leaves the parks at the same time.
• Watch for closures. The UK government's Pakistan travel advice does not list Islamabad among the areas it advises against visiting, but it warns that protests and marches in Islamabad and Rawalpindi can bring road closures and transport disruption. On such days, keep the picnic close to home and check local news before you head out.
• Agree a hard stop. Pick the leaving time when you arrive and stick to it. The last half-hour is when children get lost and elders get cold.

Family picnic transport: one vehicle, two, or a driver for the day

Getting a whole family to a picnic is where most of the planning effort goes, so it's worth thinking about family picnic transport before you think about the menu.

A few practical points when you plan:

• Luggage is real. Mats, chairs, a cool box, a pushchair and a cricket bat take up more space than people expect. Mention them when you plan the vehicle, not on the kerb.
• Elders sit near the door. Choose a vehicle where the person with the least mobility gets the easiest seat, and drop them at the gate before the driver parks.
• One vehicle means one count. With several cars, the chance of someone being "in the other car" goes up. If you split, split by household and write it down.
• Say where you want collecting. "Lake View Park, aviary gate, 5pm" is a plan. "Pick us up from the park" isn't.
