• Tolls appear. The M-2 is a tolled motorway, and the toll is paid per journey, each way.

• The driver's day changes shape. Instead of driving in short bursts with long waits, the driver is at the wheel for hours at a stretch, sometimes twice in one day.

The M-2 basics: distance, route and tolls

The M-2 motorway links Rawalpindi/Islamabad with Lahore. According to its Wikipedia entry, it is about 375 km long, is maintained by the National Highway Authority, and has service areas on both sides at Chakri, Kallar Kahar, Bhera, Sial and Sukheki, on average 60 to 80 km apart. The motorway enters the Salt Range at Kallar Kahar, and the Khewra section carries some of the highest pillared bridges in Asia. This is the hilly stretch of the trip, worth knowing about if anyone in the car gets travel sick.

How long the drive takes

There is no single official journey time, because so much depends on where in each city you start and finish. What you can work out is the floor. The motorway speed limit for cars and light transport vehicles was restored to 120 km/h in June 2026, as The Express Tribune reported. At that limit, 375 km of motorway alone takes a little over three hours of continuous driving. Real journeys are longer: add the drive from your Islamabad address to the motorway, the Lahore city leg from the motorway end to your destination, at least one rest stop, and traffic in and out of both cities. Think of the outbound run as a long morning, not a quick hop, and treat anything faster as a bonus.

Motorway toll on a day hire

The motorway toll on a day hire is paid for each direction, so a same-day return means paying it twice. In July 2026, ProPakistani reported a 7% rise in M-2 tolls from 5 July 2026 under the NHA's concession with an FWO subsidiary, putting the rate for cars, jeeps and taxis at Rs1,430, wagons at Rs2,390 and coasters at Rs3,350, stated to run until April 2027. Toll rates change from time to time, so treat any figure as a guide and ask for the toll to be shown as its own line in your quote.

A related wrinkle is the M-Tag, the electronic toll tag used on motorways. The NHA notified an extra 50% toll for vehicles without an M-Tag or without enough balance on it, and on 3 July 2026 the Islamabad High Court suspended it in an interim order, according to Dawn. The legal position may move again, so the simple step is to ask whether the car has a working M-Tag with balance. That keeps the toll predictable whatever the courts decide.

Fuel

Fuel is the other big variable. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority publishes notified petroleum prices, and those prices are revised regularly, so a figure you were given a month ago may not hold. When you plan an intercity day, ask whether fuel is included in the quoted price or charged separately, and if it is separate, how it will be worked out.

A small saloon, a larger SUV and a wagon or coaster for a big family group are not charged the same toll. The M-2 rates rise by vehicle class, and wagons and coasters sit in higher bands than cars. • You have one main purpose in Lahore, such as one appointment or one family visit, not a string of them across the city.
• You can leave early, ideally so that the outbound run is done by late morning.
• Your Lahore stop is reasonably close to the motorway end of the city, rather than on the far side of town.
• Nobody in the group needs long breaks, and there are no very young children or frail elders who will struggle with two long sits in one day.
• You are happy to start the drive back by mid-afternoon, so most of the return is in daylight.

When it starts to go wrong

• The Lahore part grows from "one visit" to "one visit, then lunch, then a quick stop at a cousin's, then the market".
• You leave late because someone is not ready, and the whole day slides.
• It is fog season. Dense winter fog can force temporary motorway closures. In December 2025, the National Highways and Motorway Police advised travellers to plan journeys between 10 am and 8 pm, as Business Recorder reported. A closure on the way back can turn a long day into a very long night.
• A wedding or event runs late, which they almost always do.

If two or more of the second list apply, plan for an overnight stay instead. It often costs less stress than it costs money.

This is the part families most often forget. On a city day, the driver waits for long stretches while you are inside a house or an office. On an intercity day with a same-day return, the driver may be behind the wheel for much of the morning, waits in Lahore, and then drives the whole way back, usually tired, often into the evening.

A few practical rules make a real difference:

1. Count the driver's day, not just yours. The driver's day starts before your pickup and ends after the drop, because they have to get to you and get home again.
2. Build in proper breaks. A tea stop at a service area is a break for the driver as well as the passengers. Ask for one on each leg as a minimum.
3. Give the driver real rest time in Lahore. If you are inside for three hours, the driver should be able to eat, pray and rest, not circle the block.
4. Do not push for "just one more stop" at the end. That extra hour lands on someone who has already driven a very long way.

• Winter fog. Dense fog can bring temporary closures on motorway sections across Punjab. The Motorway Police helpline is 130, and it also broadcasts updates on FM 95, according to the same Business Recorder report. In fog season, favour daytime driving and keep the plan flexible.
• Service areas. The M-2 rest areas were singled out for upgrades in January 2026, with the federal communications minister asking the FWO and NHA for an improvement plan, ProPakistani reported. Facilities can vary from one stop to the next, so it is sensible to carry water and snacks for children rather than relying on a particular service area.
• Travel advice. Check the UK government's Pakistan travel advice before any trip. At the time of writing, Islamabad, Lahore and the M-2 route are not among the areas the FCDO advises against. It does advise against all but essential travel within 5 miles of the India border, with exceptions for the Grand Trunk road via Wagah and the Kartarpur Corridor (both currently listed as closed), so if a Lahore day includes a trip east of the city, read that section first.
