Receiving family at Islamabad Airport: relative's car or booked pickup?

If you are receiving someone at Islamabad Airport, the honest answer is that either option works, provided the plan respects how the airport runs. The Airport Security Force limits a private car to three people including the driver for each passenger, the airport allows one greeter per passenger at the pedestrian gate, and the traveller clears immigration, the baggage belts and customs alone before coming out to you. The car park charges by the hour after the first three, the drop lane is not a waiting bay, and the terminal sits about 25 km from both Zero Point and Saddar. So the real question is not "car or taxi" but "who spends the evening at the airport, and what does it cost them?" A relative's car suits a short, predictable arrival with light luggage. A booked pickup starts to make sense when the flight lands late, the bags outnumber the seats, or the person driving has work in the morning.

What happens between landing and the concourse hall

Before anyone decides who drives, it helps to know what the passenger is doing while the family waits. The airport's international arrivals procedure runs in a fixed order:

1. Immigration. Separate lanes exist for Overseas Pakistanis, foreigners, taxpayers and special persons. Passports (and visas where needed) are checked here.
2. Baggage claim. Passengers find their flight on the screens above the belts and collect their bags. Missing bags are reported to the airline straight away, and the airport notes that damage claims must be made within 7 days.
3. Customs. Green Channel for nothing to declare, Red Channel for taxable or restricted goods. Alcohol is banned and is confiscated.
4. Out to the concourse hall. From here the car park, taxis and rent-a-car services are reached, and this is where the family meets the traveller.

Domestic arrivals are shorter: the passenger comes through the domestic arrival lounge, collects bags from the belt and walks into the same concourse area.

The part families underestimate is the gap between "landed" on the screen and a face appearing at the exit. A wide-body flight from the Gulf or the UK can put hundreds of people into the immigration hall at once, and if two or three flights land close together, the belts and customs channels fill up. Nobody can promise a number of minutes. Plan for a wait, and let the traveller message when they reach the belt rather than when the wheels touch down.

Who can enter Islamabad Airport when you come to receive someone

The question of who can enter Islamabad Airport has a short answer on the passenger side and a stricter one for everyone else.

• In the car. The ASF's frequently asked questions say only three persons, including the driver, are allowed with one passenger in a private vehicle, to avoid crowding in the concourse halls and car park. The same page is frank that visitors are sometimes not allowed in because of this limit.
• On foot. The airport's entrance gate guidance says greeters are limited to one person per passenger at the pedestrian gate, because space is tight.
• Identity. The airport asks everyone entering, on foot or by car, to have a CNIC, an airline ticket or a valid passport ready. The ASF's security instructions also ask drivers to carry the vehicle registration book and driving licence, and ask families to send the minimum number of meeters and greeters.
• Searches. Taxis and private cars from the twin cities are directed to Gate I, and ASF staff carry out body and under-vehicle searches at every entry point.

What this means in practice: the tradition of six cousins, two uncles and a garland committee arriving in three cars does not fit the rules. If the whole family wants to welcome someone home, the welcome belongs at the house. The airport run is a two- or three-person job.

The official page also lists groups usually exempt from the entry fee, including ticket holders, senior citizens and drivers using the drop lanes. Fees and exemptions can change, so treat the airport's page as the reference rather than any figure a neighbour quotes.

The waiting area at Islamabad Airport arrivals

Families ask where exactly to stand. The waiting area at Islamabad Airport arrivals is the concourse hall outside the customs exit. Greeters wait there; passengers come to them once their bags are through customs.

A few habits make that wait easier:

• Keep one phone on and charged. The traveller may have no local SIM for the first hour. Wi-Fi messages, a UK number on roaming or a local SIM bought after landing all work, but only if someone at the exit is watching.
• Use the official arrivals board. The airport's arrivals schedule shows the scheduled time, the estimated time and a status such as On Time, Delayed, Advanced, Arrived or Cancelled. Check it before leaving home, and again on the way.
• Bring water and patience, not a crowd. The concourse hall is a public space shared by many families at once.

Islamabad Airport parking for pickup, and the drop lane

When a relative drives, the car has to go somewhere while they wait. There are two options, and only one of them is for waiting.

The drop lane is for dropping off and picking up, then leaving. The ASF's instruction is blunt: observe drop-lane discipline and do not park in the drop lane. Cars left in no-parking areas can be lifted, and the airport lists a Rs 1,000 violation fine for lifting.

The general car park is the right place for Islamabad Airport parking for pickup. According to the airport's official parking page, the car park holds 2,200 vehicles and, from 1 July 2026, charges cars:

The same page says hourly rates rise by Rs 10 and the day pass by Rs 60 each July until 2028, so check it before the trip rather than relying on this table next year.

*Worked example (illustrative only):* a cousin parks at 11:00 pm for a flight due at 11:30 pm. The flight is delayed and the family leaves at 4:00 am. That is five hours, so under the 2026 rates the charge would be Rs 130 for the first three hours plus Rs 80 for each of the next two: Rs 290. Parking is rarely the expensive part. The expensive part is the lost night.

The ASF also asks drivers not to leave a car in the car park for a long time without telling the car park contractor. That matters if a relative decides to leave the car and go home with someone else.

The drive to the airport from Rawalpindi and Islamabad

Families who remember the old Benazir Bhutto International Airport sometimes budget for a quick hop. The airport that replaced it in 2018 is a proper drive out. It sits near Fateh Jang in Attock District, roughly 25 km south-west of Islamabad and about the same distance from Rawalpindi's Saddar, according to its Wikipedia entry, which also lists the road links: Srinagar Highway from Islamabad, GT Road (N-5) towards Rawalpindi, and the M-1 and M-2 motorways from the Peshawar and Lahore directions.

For most families in Islamabad the route is Srinagar Highway, which runs about 25 km east to west and ends at the Airport Interchange. From Rawalpindi, drivers either join it or use the GT Road (N-5) link. Either way, three things tend to decide how long the drive takes:

• Leaving the city. Evening traffic out of central Rawalpindi or through the sectors is slower than the open highway that follows.
• The queue at Gate I. The ASF's own FAQ explains that when several flights operate at once, many vehicles enter the airport area and long queues form. Every car is searched.
• Protests and closures. The UK FCDO's Pakistan travel advice does not advise against travel to Islamabad or Rawalpindi, but it warns that protests and marches are planned in both cities and can bring road closures and transport disruption. It advises allowing extra time and following local media. Check the page on the day of travel.

There is also a public transport link. The Orange Line of the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus has run between Peshawar Morr and the airport since April 2022, over about 25.6 km. It is useful for a light traveller, less so for a returning family with four suitcases and a grandmother.

Car size versus luggage: the part the family car often loses

A relative's car is usually chosen because it exists, not because it fits. Overseas arrivals rarely travel light: large checked cases, hand luggage, gifts, and sometimes a pushchair or car seat.

Use this rough check before the day. It is a planning prompt, not a measured capacity for any model:

Late, delayed or diverted flights

A glance at the airport's own arrivals board shows how many flights from Dubai, Doha, Jeddah and Riyadh are scheduled after midnight. That is where the relative's-car plan is tested hardest.

Consider what the person driving is signing up for:

• A delay after they have left home. The arrivals board may still say On Time when they set off and switch to Delayed while they are on Srinagar Highway. They now wait in the car park or concourse with no clear end time.
• A long gap before the passenger appears. Even after "Arrived" shows, immigration, belts and customs come first.
• A diversion or cancellation. If a flight is diverted to another city or cancelled, the airline decides what happens to passengers next. The family at Islamabad may have driven in for nothing and must drive home again, then repeat the trip.
• The drive home tired. After midnight, the drive back to the twin cities is the part of the night where fatigue matters most.

None of this is a reason to panic. Neither choice is automatically better. Here is how the two usually compare on the points families care about:

A relative's car is often the better answer when the flight lands in daylight or early evening, the traveller has one or two cases, the relative lives on the Islamabad side of the city and genuinely wants to go, and the family car fits everyone.

A booked pickup earns its place when the arrival is after midnight, the luggage is heavy, several relatives would otherwise take time off work, the traveller is going straight on to Abbottabad, Lahore or another city (check the FCDO advice for the onward destination too, as it advises against travel to parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and currently flags demonstrations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir), or the family simply does not own a car large enough.

When booking a pickup helps the relative too

This is the part families rarely say out loud. The relative who "doesn't mind" driving to the airport at 2:00 am often does mind. They may have a shop to open, children to get to school or a long commute. Asking them to wait five hours in a car park is a real favour, and it is fair to weigh it as one.

A booked pickup does not have to remove the relative from the welcome. A few arrangements families use:

1. The relative rides along. The booked car collects the relative on the way, so the traveller still sees a familiar face at the exit. Keep within the three-persons-per-passenger rule.
2. The relative waits at home. The traveller is met at the concourse hall and brought to the house, where the real welcome happens with the whole family and a proper meal.
3. Split the jobs. The relative drives the traveller, and a second, larger vehicle takes the luggage. Useful when there is more luggage than seats.
4. The relative handles the return. If the relative prefers the daytime drop-off at the end of the trip, the family books only the late arrival.

4. Count the bags honestly and match the vehicle to them.
