Return a rental car to a different location or address in Pakistan

Yes, you can usually return a rental car to a different location in Pakistan, but only if the change is agreed before you drive away, and only if someone is named to receive the car at the other end. The two questions that decide everything are simple: is the new drop-off point in the same city or a different one, and who will physically check the car, sign for it and take the keys? A drop at your aunt's house in DHA Lahore is a very different job for the operator from a drop in Karachi, and both are different again from leaving the car at Islamabad International Airport while you queue for a 4am flight. Expect a separate drop-off or collection charge in most cases, and expect the operator to want the arrangement written into your rental agreement or confirmed by message. If you can't get it in writing, treat it as not agreed.

This guide is for the family trips where the plan changes: you collect in Islamabad, spend a week in Rawalpindi, then want the car to finish at a relative's home, a hotel, or the departures kerb. It covers the fees, the handover person, unattended returns and the paperwork that protects your deposit.

Return rental car to a different location: address or city?

Rental companies think about a changed drop-off in terms of one thing: how their staff get the car back to base, and how their driver gets home afterwards.

A different address in the same city

This is the family case. You picked up at the operator's office in Gulberg and want to end at your cousin's house in Johar Town, or at your hotel on the Mall. The operator has to send someone out, inspect the car at that address and drive it back. That is usually a short round trip, so it tends to be the easiest change to agree, and some operators treat it as part of a "collection from home" service rather than a special request.

A different city

Ending in another city is a one-way hire. Someone has to drive the car back hundreds of kilometres, or the operator needs a branch or partner in that city willing to take it. That takes planning on their side. Some operators simply do not offer it. Others will quote for it on selected routes only, typically busy corridors where a return driver is easy to arrange.

The airport

An airport drop sits in between. It is in the same metro area, but the car is being handed over in a place with time pressure, security checks and paid parking. That combination is why it deserves its own plan (see below).

What drives the drop-off fee

We can't give you a price, because there isn't a standard one. Each operator sets its own charge, and many only quote once they know the address and the time. What you can do is understand what the charge is paying for, so you can compare offers sensibly.

A rental car drop off fee or rental car collection from home charge usually reflects:

• Staff time and travel. Someone has to reach your address and get back. A late-night or pre-dawn collection costs the operator more than a midday one.
• Distance back to base. A drop across town is small; a drop in another city means fuel, motorway tolls and a day of a driver's time on the way back.
• Waiting. If the handover window is vague, the operator may price in waiting time.
• Airport parking. At an airport, somebody pays to park while the handover happens. Who pays should be written down.
• Risk of an unattended return. If nobody from the company will be present, some operators charge more, ask for a larger deposit hold, or refuse.

Ask for the charge as a single number that includes all of the above, and ask whether it changes if your plans slip by a day. A quote that says "drop-off extra, to be confirmed" is not a quote.

Who signs for the car at the new address

This is the part families most often skip, and it causes most of the disputes. If you are flying out and the car is being collected from your uncle's house the next morning, then your uncle is doing the return inspection on your behalf. Whatever he agrees to, or fails to notice, you are bound by.

Before you agree any drop at a relative's home or a hotel, settle these points:

1. Name the person. Give the operator the full name and mobile number of whoever will hand over the keys. Ideally that person is also added to the booking notes.
2. Agree what they can sign. A relative can confirm the car was handed back and the time. They should not accept new damage on your behalf. Ask the operator to send any damage claim to you, the hirer, in writing.
3. Make sure they are actually home. A wedding week, a funeral or a Friday prayer can empty a house. Set a window of an hour or two, not "sometime in the morning".
4. Tell the chowkidar or reception. In gated societies and hotels, the operator's staff may be stopped at the gate. Give the guard or front desk the driver's name and the car's registration number in advance.
5. Keep the keys in one pair of hands. Don't leave keys under a mat, with a neighbour's child or "in the usual place".

At a hotel, the front desk may be willing to hold keys, but that is a courtesy, not their job. Ask the hotel first and ask the operator whether a hotel handover is acceptable to them. Some operators will only release your deposit once their own staff have inspected the car.

Keys, fuel and photos at an unattended return

Sometimes nobody from the company can meet you. That's common at very early flights, and it's where a quick, disciplined routine saves arguments later.

Before you walk away

• Fuel. Match the fuel level shown on your agreement. Fill up at a station near the drop point and keep the receipt, which shows the date, time and place.
• Photos and video. Walk around the car and film all four sides, the roof if you can reach it, the wheels, the windscreen and the interior. Film the dashboard with the ignition on so the fuel gauge, mileage and any warning lights are visible. Your phone stamps each clip with the date and time, which is exactly what you want if a damage claim arrives a week later.
• Personal items. Check the boot, door pockets, glovebox and under the seats. Chargers, sunglasses and a child's shoe are the usual casualties.
• Documents. If the vehicle's registration book or token tax papers were in the glovebox at pickup, leave them where you found them and film that too.
• Locking. Lock the car and film yourself trying the handle.

The key handover

Agree in advance exactly where the key goes: a named staff member, a key drop at the operator's desk, or a sealed envelope with a hotel. Message the operator the moment you hand it over, with a photo. If the plan is a lockbox or a hiding place, get that instruction in writing, because if the car or key goes missing you will want proof you followed their instructions rather than improvised.

After you've gone

Ask the operator to confirm by message when their staff have collected the car and whether they found any issue. Keep your photos until your deposit has been returned in full.

How to leave a rental car at the airport without missing your flight

If you want to leave the rental car at the airport, plan it the way you would plan an airport pickup: backwards from the flight, with slack built in. The car is the last thing on a long list that morning, and you may face entry checks and traffic on the airport approach that you can't control.

Check what the airport actually offers

Pakistan's big airports have paid public car parks, but they are not rental return lots. Islamabad International Airport, for example, lists a general car park with space for 2,200 vehicles on its official parking page. The published tariff there charges rental and commercial vehicles a flat rate for the first three hours and then by the hour, offers a day pass, and lists a fine for vehicles lifted from no-parking zones. It also sets out yearly increases through 2028, so check the airport's own figures on the day rather than relying on anything you read second-hand. Lahore's Allama Iqbal International Airport has a multi-storey car park, and Karachi's Jinnah International Airport has a car park for more than 3,000 vehicles, according to the Wikipedia entries for Allama Iqbal International Airport and Jinnah International Airport, which also note ongoing expansion work at Lahore that can move things around.

What this means for you: there is normally no rental desk waiting in the car park to take your keys. Either the operator sends someone to meet you, or you park, pay, and follow an agreed key procedure.

Three workable airport handovers

1. Met handover in the car park. The operator's staff meet you at an agreed row or level at a set time, inspect the car with you and take the key. This is the cleanest option. Agree who pays the parking ticket.
2. Kerbside handover. You drive to the departures drop-off, unload, and their staff take the wheel. Kerbside stops are meant to be brief, so this only works if the operator's driver is already standing there when you arrive.
3. Unattended car park return. You park, pay or keep the ticket as instructed, and hand the key over by whatever method was agreed in writing. Use the photo routine above and send the operator the exact parking location.

Timing it

Work out when you need to be inside the terminal for your airline, add the time for the handover and a buffer for the entry checks, then set the car handover time from that. If the operator's staff are late, you need to be able to walk away, which is only safe if the unattended option is already agreed as a fallback. A practical alternative for early flights: end the hire the evening before at your home or hotel, then take an airport transfer in the morning. You lose a few hours of self-drive but gain a calm handover in daylight, with someone to sign for the car.

When you want to drop off the rental car in another city

If you need to drop off the rental car in another city, raise it at the very start, before you compare prices. It changes which operators can help at all, and it changes the paperwork.

Things to confirm for a city-to-city drop:

• Is there a receiving point? Ask for the exact address, the name of whoever receives the car there, and their opening hours. A branch that closes at 8pm is no use for a car arriving at 10pm after a slow day on the road.
• Is the drop-off charge fixed? Get one figure for the one-way element, separate from the daily hire rate.
• What if you are late? Ask what happens if you arrive the next morning instead: an extra day, a waiting charge, or a new arrangement.
• Tolls and fuel. Motorway tolls change from time to time, so check who pays them and how. Ask whether the car must arrive with the same fuel level it left with.
• Insurance cover on the route. Ask whether the cover in your agreement applies for the whole journey, and whether any areas are excluded.

Check the route against travel advice

Before planning any long one-way drive, read the UK government's travel advice for Pakistan. At the time of writing, the FCDO advises against all travel to some areas, including Balochistan, several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Peshawar city, and against all but essential travel to others, including Sindh north of and including Nawabshah. It also warns that travel insurance can be invalidated if you travel against its advice. A drop-off city on or beyond one of those lines is not a trip to plan as a family road trip, whatever a rental quote says. The advice changes, so check it on the day you plan and again before you set off.

The same FCDO safety and security page says UK licence holders need the 1968 version of the International Driving Permit alongside their UK licence, notes that road quality away from the main motorways is variable, and recommends experienced local drivers, in clear weather only, on the northern mountain routes. For a long one-way distance, weigh that honestly against booking a car with a driver instead.

Getting the change confirmed in writing

A changed drop-off agreed on the phone at the pickup counter is easy to forget and hard to prove. Whatever you agree, ask for it in writing, either as an amended rental agreement or as a message from the operator's official number or email. The message should say:

1. The drop-off address or location, with a map pin for homes in large housing societies.
2. The date and time window for the handover.
3. The receiving person, on both sides: who hands over, who collects.
4. The fee, as a single figure, and how it is paid.
5. Fuel and mileage expectations at return.
6. The key procedure if nobody from the company is present.
7. How and when the deposit is released, and how damage will be reported to you.

If the operator changes any of this later, for example because their driver is unavailable, ask for the new arrangement in writing too. Keep the whole thread until your deposit is back.

A worked example: ending the hire at a relative's house

*This is an illustrative example, not a real booking or a quoted price.*

A family flies into Islamabad from Manchester, collects a self-drive car at the operator's office, and spends ten days between Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Their flight home leaves in the early hours. Rather than return the car at the airport in the dark, they plan this:

• At booking: they tell the operator the hire will end at the grandmother's house in Rawalpindi on the evening before the flight, not at the office.
• Receiving person: the father is the hirer; his brother, who lives at the house, is named as a backup contact.
• Fee: the operator confirms a collection charge in writing as one figure.
• Handover: at 7pm the operator's staff arrive, inspect the car in the driveway with the father, and photograph the fuel gauge. The father films his own walk-around too.
• Next morning: the family takes a pre-arranged airport transfer, and nobody is juggling car keys at the terminal.

The point of the example is the order of decisions: address, person, fee and time are all fixed before the car leaves the office.

A pre-trip checklist for a changed drop-off

Copy this into your notes before you collect the car:

• [ ] Drop-off type decided: same-city address, airport or another city
• [ ] Full address and map pin sent to the operator
• [ ] Handover person named, with a mobile number
• [ ] Backup contact named
• [ ] Drop-off or collection charge confirmed as one figure
• [ ] Airport parking: who pays, which car park, where the key goes
• [ ] Fuel level and mileage expectation noted
• [ ] Unattended-return procedure agreed in writing, if it might be needed
• [ ] Deposit release timing confirmed
• [ ] FCDO advice checked for any long one-way route
• [ ] Walk-around video planned for pickup and return
